Visiting Author | Philip Hoare

Author and ocean enthusiast Philip Hoare will draw from his new book, RISINGTIDEFALLINGSTAR  (University of Chicago Press) in discussing the way humans relate to the sea's natural history: its whales, birds, tides and myths. From Thoreau to Melville, Virginia Woolf and Oscar Wilde, he takes up human stories that intertwine with mysteries of the sea. An experienced broadcaster, curator and filmmaker, Hoare is author of The Whale (2009) and The Sea Inside (2013), a regular contributor to The Guardian and professor of Creative Writing at the University of Southampton, UK. He also curated the Moby Dick Big Read, a free online audio version of Melville’s book read by Tilda Swinton, John Waters, Mary Oliver, Nathaniel Philbrick, Sir David Attenborough, Benedict Cumberbatch, Stephen Fry, Simon Callow and many others.
