FAV screening | Portraits
RISD's Film/Animation/Video department presents the first film in its virtual spring series, Understanding Perceptions of Space and Time. Curated by faculty member Devon Narine-Singh, the series will explore the ways in which we perceive spatial occupation and our relation to it as well as time, bringing together a multigenerational group of artists exploring these themes, including Sonali Gulati, Jim Hubbard, Luis Vasquez La Roche, Vashti Harrison, Elizabeth Mehling, Celine Parreñas Shimizu, Charles De Augustin, Joie Estrella Horowitz, Stephen Winter, Natasha Raheja, Carleen Maur, MM Serra and Greg Scott.
The first program, Portraits, is designed to question what the subject of a portrait is. Traditionally we associate the term with a representation in relation to a human form or identity. We are met with portraits of an institution and its ideology, of a canon held up and remade, and the choice to be visible/invisible. None are confined to simple documentations; both rather act as capturing of far more nuanced essences.
Many thanks to the RISD Social Equity & Inclusion Fund, Division of Fine Arts and Film/Animation/Video department for sponsoring this series.
