Price for Their Pound of Flesh - a book talk with Daina Ramey Berry
Ever wonder how much an enslaved African cost after surviving the long Middle Passage? How about in a private sale in the home of Providence resident? How much can a soul be sold for?
On April 20th RISD, the Center for Reconciliation, and the Center for the Study of Slavery and Justice will host Dr. Daina Ramey Berry for a conversation about her provacative new book, Price for Their Pound of Flesh.
“Unlike some recent books on slavery and capitalism, Berry pays systematic attention to the ways in which the enslaved sought to counteract the ruthless economic exploitation of their bodies and labor. Focusing closely on how slaves were valued from conception to their death and beyond, she gets to the dark heart of southern slavery, the commodification of human beings.”
