Faculty workshop | Managing Difficult Moments in the Classroom

Please join Patricia Barbeito for a discussion on moments of tension—sudden eruptions of emotion or conflict, as well as problematic classroom dynamics—which are an inescapable part of the classroom experience. How can you, as the instructor, use these moments to foster dialogue and learning? In this interactive workshop, we will discuss various strategies for framing and handling such moments and will work through some case studies in order to practice how to respond in the moment.

A very helpful and needed discussion, with an engaged and skilled instructor. I had to leave early, but really appreciated the course, and I especially appreciated the discussion of dominant narratives. I do think it might have been useful to have specific discussions about difficult moments in studio crits vs. difficult moments in lecture courses. I'd be really happy to attend follow-up session on this topic and continue to learn about tools that can be used to create a supportive learning environment for all students.
