Dinner + Dialogue | Lee Mun Wah | MLK Series 2017–18

"How to Have a Dialogue across Cultures" | Student Dinner & Dialogue with Lee Mun Wah

So often we are afraid to begin a conversation about diversity issues because we have had a bad experience or feel others will say something wrong or hurtful. This "dialogue across cultures" is particularly exciting and satisfying because it helps everyone practice talking to someone who is different from themselves in a compassionate and honest way. Students will learn that they are not alone in their fears and though we all lack a model of how to begin this type of conversation, the most important ingredient is our sincerity and our willingness to learn from and understand each other.

We will practice sharing with each other through small-group interactions, role plays and personal stories. Students will:

  • Notice the impact and intent of their words

  • Learn to respond compassionately and openly about diversity issues

  • Listen mindfully

  • Discover how personal histories shape our perceptions and attitudes

  • Create a sense of community through dialogue and stories

  • Respond appropriately in difficult conversations
