Visiting designer | RISD x Haworth
The Cappellini Dream
with Giulio Cappellini
Hosted by President Rosanne Somerson
Traditionally, anything of “high design” is created by an artist to be extraordinarily unique and beautiful, but not necessarily practical. Giulio Cappellini takes to a more expanded view of art and design. The furnishings created for the Cappellini brand are all at once artful and useful. In a virtual presentation brought to you in partnership with RISD's Department of Furniture Design and Haworth, join Giulio Cappellini as he shares stories of his designer discoveries and relationships, and shows you the innovative art, technology, and craftsmanship of Cappellini products. The session will be broken into a 30 minute presentation by Giulio followed by a 30 minute Q&A with Giulio and President Somerson.
An architect from Milan, Giulio Cappellini is the owner of the design firm Cappellini, which he has transformed into one of the biggest trendsetters worldwide. Many Cappellini products can be found in the permanent collections at some of the world’s most renowned contemporary art museums. With the spirit and the aims of a man in continuous renewal, Giulio is frequently sought as art director for a number of important design brands, and as a lecturer all around the world. He also collaborates with opinion leaders in compiling various texts on the history of design. Recently, he was selected by Time magazine as one of 10 global trendsetters in the field of fashion and design and as worldwide ambassador of excellence of Italian design.
In 1995 Somerson became the first leader of RISD’s new Furniture Design department, helping to establish its strong reputation in the field. Throughout her career Somerson has pursued her own furniture-making practice, creating work that is featured in exhibitions and included in private, corporate and museum collections at the Louvre’s Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Fuller Craft Museum, the Huntsville [AL] Museum of Art and the RISD Museum.
