It’s no secret that RISD students are driven, passionately focused on their work, and deeply committed to developing their full creative potential. Beyond RISD is an alumni lecture series that provides students and alumni an opportunity to consider how their unique capabilities can provide the key to a successful career.
After receiving a bachelor’s degree from the Rhode Island School of Design and master’s from the School of Visual Arts, David Stark honed his talents as an artist during his thirteen years as co-owner and creative director of event planning firm Avi Adler to emerge as the recent founder, president and creative director of his own event planning and design company, David Stark Design & Production.
Today, at David Stark Design & Production, David oversees production of events for the world’s most prestigious brands and personalities. Still, no project is too big or too small for David and his team of talented designers, managers and artists who produce and design a wide range of events, from high-end intimate dinner parties to elaborate destination weddings and large-scale corporate functions. Whether working with celebrity clients such as Beyoncé Knowles and Jon Stewart, or major corporations such as Target, TBS and Condé Nast, David Stark Design & Production is known throughout the industry for transforming any event into the most extraordinary of experiences.
In April 2010, Stark released his newest book David Stark Design; a visually stunning monograph that documents David Stark Design and Production’s design philosophies, conceptual process, and breadth of work put forth since the Company’s inception in 2005. The book was published by Monacelli Press. His previous books include Napkins with a Twist (Artisan, 2006), To Have & to Hold: Magical Wedding Bouquets (Artisan, 2005), and Wild Flowers: Projects and Inspirations (Clarkson Potter).
Stark’s first product line, a holiday decorating collection with West Elm, debuted in stores late summer 2009. Inspired by Stark’s trademark approach of turning everyday materials into glamorous and unexpected installations, the collection included ornaments, garlands, table décor, and other elements made from natural, recycled, and eco-friendly materials. This holiday season Stark will collaborate again with West Elm on a new collection set to debut in November 2010.
“CBS’ The Early Show,” “The Today Show,” “The View,” and “Martha Stewart” are several television shows that often call upon David to serve as a guest expert on décor, party planning, holiday decorating and home planting projects. David and his work are often featured in publications including the New York Times, ELLE DECOR, Glamour, Interior Design, In Style, House Beautiful, and Town & Country, as well as on a number of design-focused blogs.
Beyond RISD is brought to you through the generosity of RISD trustee and alumnae Lisa Pevaroff-Cohn ‘83/TX.
